Program copilot

1 - Inspiration

Minutes after departing LGA on its route to CLT, UAL1459 encountered a "perfect storm" birdstrike, crippling the aircraft by losing all engine power. It was impossible to return to LGA or even divert to TEB in the short timeframe left where the crew could keep the Airbus 320 in the air.

A catastrophic ending for 150+ passengers and crew seemed inevitable. ATC had more or less given up on the flight as it quickly dropped below radar detection.  Given its low altitude and lack of engine power, the crew decided to ditch the plane by gliding it into the Hudson River between NYC and NJ.  With wisdom, technical expertise, creativity, and calm, Captain Sully Sullenberger and Copilot Jeffrey Skiles successfully landed the enormous jet in the river safely.  All passengers and crew survived after executing a nearly flawless evacuation.

Was it luck?  Yes the weather was unseasonably pleasant and the waters in the Hudson were unusually tranquil.  But the professionalism, technical expertise, and a firm commitment to adhering to a proven process were the main reasons why the flight's passengers and crew returned home safely that evening.

2 - Purpose

The purpose of the copilot program is to increase technological knowledge, skill level, and confidence in the copilot team.   By using a variety of learning methodologies including formal training, simulation, informal discussions, and hands-on project work, I believe that, in addition to existing one-on-one training, team members can accelerate the rate of skill benefits to land their "aircraft" successfully with me as your copilot.

3 - Team

I decided to form this team because it will be rewarding for all of us.  For me, I enjoy teaching people who really want to learn so that they can accomplish things that make a difference.  Each invited team member has a definitive goal in mind that we are currently working on.  The team members all have military/aviation backgrounds and have expressed a desire to learn about Microsoft Copilot.

4 - Benefits

After each copilot meeting, everyone on the team will be able to gain tangible benefits as a result of participation.  Each meeting will begin by describing those benefits.  Subsequently, through the use of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises, the team will realize new skills that will aid them in achieving their objectives.

5 - MethodologIes

A. Simulation

Whether you are trying to learn how to use mail merge in Microsoft Word or how to get a 747 airborne, you may learn best by using simulation.

B. Lectures
